Children and Worldviews: Shir's story

The Children and Worldviews Project explores qualitative, narrative methods to investigate the worldviews of children, that is, the way in which they make sense of their experiences and matters which are of particular importance to them.

Shir's story

I support Manchester United. I've just recently joined this school in year 4, education is alright. I've made a lot of friends. I moved from Birmingham. I live with my sisters and my Mum. My Dad doesn't sort of live with me now, he's in Southampton. He doesn't live very far from us. I see him sometimes.

Helping mum

My police car is very important because when I see my Mum sitting down on a chair I run upstairs to my toy box to get my police car. I come running down and I jump halfway down the stairs, then I can see my sisters sitting in my Mums lap. Then I put my batteries in my police car and I switch my batteries in and my police car on. My sisters come running to my police car and they block the way. The car will normally go in different directions, but only if it crashes, if it runs into something. What it normally crashes in is my sisters, then my Mum would normally call them for dinner, but my Mum is really calling me for dinner so my sisters would normally keep my little sister in company by playing Mum and Dad and then my Mum can have her dinner in peace.

When Mum sits down and my sister sits in her lap, my Mum gets very angry because she wants a rest after doing all the work and my sisters helping her. She wants a rest and my sisters jump on her and she can't have a rest then, so I have to go upstairs and get my police car and when I put it on and my sisters go 'Oh oh my brothers got the police car'. Then they run to my police car and just start mucking about with my police car.

I don't mind so long as they are out of Mum's way then my Mum can have a rest. When I first bought it my cousin gave it to me for my Christmas present, when I first bought it I tested it, I thought 'this is really going to work'. When I opened it there was nice shining lights and I used in the dark and it really worked, so I sometimes I do it in the dark.

I give it mostly to my sisters to play with, I don't mind if they damage it because I got more toys. Mostly I like helping my Mum at home cos at the moment, she's just recently had a stitch in her hand and she can't do much like she can't comb my hair in the morning and that because it's hard to do so I try to do it myself because if she does it, it aches and at night and in the cold it aches as well.

Sometimes I'm naughty, but I'm really good at the moment. I try my best to be good, for my Mum and because of her hand. She's got blocked nerves I think in it and that's why she had to have this thin needle in her hand.

I've got a blood test coming up. I think it's that I'm so weak and my Mum said 'it's best to tell the Doctor' and I told the Doctor and he said to have a blood test, but I've already had one, but I've got to have another one on April 1st.

I don't really want money, I don't really want it, but I want to help my Mum like save up and get some more shopping in the house. We got a big family, plus we've got to have a lot of money to pay off like bills and heating.

Mostly we care about our parents cos they bring us stuff and that, like toys and food and that. I get a pound from my Mum and I use it like, I don't go to the shops and buy sweets and that. I save it up and I help my Mum like to get the shopping and that. I save my money and give it back to her so that Mum can get her shopping in and that.

Other members of my family

I like my Gran cos once she gave a leather jacket and I still got it, but I can't wear it because it doesn't fit me now. I might get it out next year because it nearly fitted me now. She lives here in town. My Dad's Mum lives in Birmingham. I'm an Indian. I was born here in the south, then I went to Birmingham, then I came back. I'm still Indian, well I was just born Indian wasn't I? My Mum was born in Southampton as well and my sisters were born in Birmingham. My Dad's Dad was born in India, but he died. He did live in England, but he came from India.

I'm a Sikh and I have a lot of Sikh friends. If we want to get some friends, well if your cousins live over here and your cousins got some friends, you can get your cousin to make some friends for you so that's how I got my friends. Once I was with my cousin and we went down Venture and cos I had no friends, my cousin took me down the Venture and I went down Venture and start playing and the next day, I saw this boy at the Venture when I went and the next day I was at school and I said 'I saw you at the Venture didn't I?' and he said 'do you want to be friends' I said 'yeh' and he got all his friends to be my friends.

Sometimes in the Summer we get my cousins and all of us we get together and sometimes we get our friends involved and we go down like a big place like Royal Pier, or Ocean Village or Town Park or somewhere to go play and our Mums go to the shops while we look after the kids, look after the baby, and our Mums go and get some drinks instead of bringing them from home and we get proper fresh food as well.

When my sister was ill

My sister is eight and once at lunch she stopped breathing and they had to put a mask on her and she stayed in hospital for four days and my Mum had to keep going with her, and after that my Mum had her blood test and she stopped breathing at night and she start crying and first she called my big sister, but she was fast asleep. Then she called my other sister, she was fast asleep, then she called my Mum and she was fast asleep, then she called me and I was asleep, but I woke up and I could hear somebody crying. And then my Mum woke up as well, then my Mum got out of bed and she went to see what was wrong with her and when she found out. My other sister helped my Mum to get all her clothes ready and my Mum called an ambulance.

They had her in a separate room and then they put these machines on her. I don't know what was wrong, but my Mum still knows. She's a lot better, but she has to stay warm.

I do get worried about her, well a little bit, cos she's very special to me. Every time she gets sweets I say 'can I have some, can I have some?' and she always gives me some. I owe her about 30p cos once she bought me a new folder for like art stuff and she gave it me and I still have to owe her and I said 'cos you gave me a lot of sweets and that, I'm gonna give you 50p'.

I like my other little sister because she's always like company like, she doesn't go on to Mum, she does go onto my Mum sometimes when she wants a rest as well but then my Mum says she wants to go to sleep and I say 'put her down so you can go to sleep'.

But she's really naughty, in fact she bites people, and she's very strong, she can be so naughty sometimes then when the machine's on. We just recently got a new machine and she mucked it up and my cousin came and he messes about with her and they muck the machine up as well, but we still got four years guarantee on it. I don't know what they did, but we think they pressed a different button.

My little sister, she always after me for sweets and she's always after them and when my Mum's sorting her money out for bills and that, my sisters come running fast so they can get their money and shout 'Mum money, Mum money, Mum money' so they get their money so they can go shops and my Mum says they can have 10p in their hands and they all get 10p and my Mum says 'can you go to shops and buy their sweets and be out of my way?' Me, I don't like getting sweets, but I have to help look after my sister.

When I'm older

I always wanted a car so when I grow up I'm going to get a nice fast car, probably a Mercedes or a Porsche.

I like your story. I live with my dad. I like living with my dad because he brings me sweets sometimes. I haven't got any brothers and sisters. What's it like living without your dad? I think it would be quite sad cause you haven't got a dad around. I live by the seafront and from my mum's bedroom window I can see it. I like looking out at the sea and sometimes I see some boats. I think it would be quite nice to go out on a boat. I would like to go out as far as I could, I'd like to go to Spain and play and go swimming.
